I am a retired musician, and when people ask me this one, I always ask back. Do you want automatic level tools, or do you want one button color? 🎚️

Direct answer first. Pick the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 for more gain, Auto Gain, Clip Safe, and loopback. Pick the SSL 2 for quieter preamps, a built in high pass filter, and the Legacy 4K color button.
Here is the number that decides it for a lot of people. SSL lists -130.5 dBu of equivalent input noise against Focusrite’s -127 dBu on the Scarlett 2i2, yet the 2i2 still offers more usable gain, 69 dB against the SSL 2’s 64 dB.
By the end of this guide, you will know exactly where each interface wins, where it loses, and which one actually fits your workflow.
This comparison draws on Focusrite’s and Solid State Logic’s own spec sheets, plus the independent reviews cited in our full reviews of both interfaces. It does not rest on bench testing, so I name the source whenever I share someone’s experience.
Quick Verdict
| Gain and headroom | Scarlett 2i2 wins. 69 dB of gain and +16 dBu max input vs the SSL 2’s 64 dB and +9.7 dBu. |
| Noise floor | SSL 2 wins. -130.5 dBu equivalent input noise vs -127 dBu on the 2i2. |
| Beginner protection | Scarlett 2i2 wins. Auto Gain and Clip Safe set levels for you. The SSL 2 has neither. |
| Analog color | SSL 2 wins. Legacy 4K adds harmonic color per channel, a feature the 2i2 does not have. |
| Headphone output | SSL 2 wins. Two jacks, though they share one mix. The 2i2 has one jack. |
| Best for | 2i2 for beginners and streamers. SSL 2 for anyone chasing the cleanest possible chain. |
Buy the 2i2 if you want the interface to protect you from mistakes. Buy the SSL 2 if you already know how to gain stage and want the quietest signal path available at this price.

How Do They Sound Different?
Both are clean. The difference shows up in the extras each one adds on top of clean.
What does Legacy 4K actually add?
SSL describes Legacy 4K as controlled harmonic distortion plus a forward, musical high frequency boost, modeled on its 4000 series consoles. Sound On Sound calls the treble lift quite obvious, great on some sources and a bit much on others.
It works in the analog path, so you commit to the sound as you record, with no way to undo it later.
What do Air modes actually add?
Focusrite’s two Air modes work the other direction, adding brightness and a touch of harmonic drive modeled on Focusrite’s classic ISA preamps. Unlike Legacy 4K, Air is a digital effect you can audition and switch off per channel without committing in the analog domain.
My take as a musician. Air is the more forgiving option if you are still learning what coloration you actually like. Legacy 4K rewards someone who already knows 🎸
Which One Protects Beginners Better?
The Scarlett 2i2, clearly.
Auto Gain sets your input level automatically from a few seconds of speech, and Clip Safe drops the gain in real time if a sudden loud sound threatens to clip. The SSL 2 has neither feature. You set levels by hand and watch the meters yourself.
If you have never gain staged an interface before, that gap matters more than any spec on a sheet.
Which One Handles Headphone Monitoring Better?
It depends on what you need from a second headphone jack.
The SSL 2 has two headphone jacks, but Sound On Sound confirms the second one duplicates the first and shares its volume control. The Scarlett 2i2 has only one jack, so this is a wash unless you specifically want two people listening to the identical mix at the same time.
Neither interface gives a second person independent volume control. For that, you would need a model like the SSL 2+.

Which One Should You Buy?
Buy the Scarlett 2i2 if
- You are new to gain staging and want automatic protection
- You record a loud dynamic mic that needs real headroom
- You want flexible, switchable coloration rather than a fixed analog effect
Buy the SSL 2 if
- You already gain stage correctly and want the quietest preamps available
- You want a high pass filter built into the hardware
- You like the idea of committing to an analog character while you record

Did You Know 🤯
The SSL 2 MKII lifted its output dynamic range from 112 dB to 120 dB over the original SSL 2, an 8 dB jump that Sound On Sound confirmed through direct measurement.
